Ring Jacket -Spence Bryson Trousers

Seeing as Ring Jacket added two pairs of linen trousers in my favourite trouser model to their summer collection this year, I thought I would give linen trousers yet another try.

My previous experience with linen has left a lot to desire, although I recon that has a lot more to do with the quality of that particular linen, than the properties of linen itself.

It didn’t hurt the decision process that the two colours offered were in a shade of brown and one in green. It seems to be a common trend if you want my attention; show me your greens and browns.

I’ll admit, because I sort of rejected the whole idea of 100% linen for tailored wear eariler, I haven’t done a whole lot of research on this particular summer fabric.

I’m fully aware of the great properties it provides for wearing during the summer, but in terms of mills and merchants I’m not very educated.

Fabric

These trousers are made of 100% linen from Spence Bryson. Being Irish linen, naturally it’s quite a heavy cloth at 382,5g, which puts it on the heavier side even for Irish linen.

Off the rack the fabric of these trousers seems very crisp and quite stiff but I recon some wears will bring some more flow to them. Hopefully, being quite a heavy cloth, it will retain shape better than what I have worn before.

Now under the Ulster Weavers Ltd. brand, Spence Bryson has well over a hundred years of producing quality linen and looking at the cloth I have faith that these trousers will live up to the expectations.

Model

As for the trouser model, being the S-178 model, every detail is a 100% according to my preferences. Going back to the trousers from my custom order suits, obviously a little more rise would be nice, but this model does still look really good with a 24,cm rise.

Also, if I were to order linen trousers custom in the future, these trousers will be a good way to see if linen is for me or not.

Colour

Both of the colours I acquired are beautiful.

Even though summer calls for lighter colours I personally tend to lean towards darker. This is mostly because one tends to be more active in the summer and stains, sweat and so on can easily become an issue. That being said the green trousers look amazing and are a nice contribution to my wardrobe. I’m not sure whether I would call it Olive or Sage, but you can determine for yourself.

The brown pair is of course not as tinted as the green, and come in this beautiful, I’d say light tobacco, sepia or russet brown. It’s quite close to the colour of my yet to arrive suit from Fox Brothers and a colour I would consider if I was to make a linen suit.

Conclusion

Although I haven’t worn them more than a couple of times, my first impression is really good.

I’ll update this part when I have some more wears to work from, but for now: the fabric is not too coarse, holds it’s shape seemingly well (for linen) and of course I really like the colours quite a lot. I quite like the linen these are made of with it’s rustic textured look, the heaviness of the fabric while still being very breathable.

I recon these will mostly be worn without a jacket; the whole purpose with these trousers are to be able to wear trousers on the hottest days of summer.

Even so, my first time wearing them I paired them with a jacket as seen above. Coincidentally the same jacket for both.

The brown trousers looks amazing paired with any shade of blue and lighter browns.

The green pair looks great with an array of colours, among them brown and of course blues as well.

As such I’m hopeful the increasingly hotter weather will allow me to wear them with a jacket occasionally.
