Subalpino Cotton/Wool

Ring Jacket RTW

Between the devastation of lockdowns upon lockdowns there was a shimmering light in 2020; the two suits I got from Ring Jacket. Sounds silly enough, I know.

But Ring Jacket presents a certain amount of suits every season and among those there are usually some made up of the model S-178 trousers and the No-269 jacket. In addition, as per my preference, two or three of those have trousers with side adjusters.

Well, in 2020 there was both a green and a brown one. My two favourite colours for casual suits.

Cloth Properties

Lanificio Subalpino

  →  Chocolate Brown

  • 60% cotton / 40% wool

  • 310/330g

  • Twill

The fabric for this suit is from Subalpino, a 60% cotton, 40% wool cloth in a beautiful chocolate brown.

The weight is 310/330g and this suit wears quite heavy due to the cotton. I actually tried it on in-store when I got the Army Serge, but decided not to buy it because it just felt too heavy.

Despite first rejecting it I must say this suit was probably the one I’ve wore the most throughout that winter. It’s amazingly comfortable, warm and feels very sturdy.

What I like about this cloth is that with a mix fabric like this you get the benefit of both worlds. There’s enough wool for the garment to drape fgairly well and with such a high percentage of cotton it doesn’t have to be too heavy for it to insulate well. Which is perfect for someone like me whom doesn’t particularly like jackets that are too heavy.

Moreover, I really appreciate the look of brown cotton. Just like brown linen, the combination of colour and fiber has a certain look that no other cloth does. But as with linen, the down side is that it creases easily and although cotton drapes to some extent, there’s no sharp lines after a few wears. The amount of wool present in this cloth lets me enjoy the brown cotton look without the same amount of creasing.

Suit

The jacket model, the No-269, is the exact same as the Army Serge down to the fine details.

Double stitching along the lapels, pockets and the skirt.

The stitching is not as prominent on the brown suit as the Army Serge, but it’s still more than visible enough and gives the fabric some nice depth.

As with the Army Serge, the S-178 trousers with two pleats and side adjusters.

The S-178 has an elongated  waistband  with one button.

Lastly, of course, turn-ups.
